About New Consciousness

There is Nothing "New" About New Consciousness

How often have you heard -- in the world of  New Age discourse -- that we're on "the brink of a consciousness shift?" Hundreds of woo-woo websites, authors and others proclaim that we're on the verge of a massive shift in spiritual awareness... a new consciousness. But there is nothing going on in human consciousness today that hasn't been happening since the beginning of human history. Life is constantly evolving. Energy is dynamic. The universe is not stagnant.

In other words, there is nothing "new" about new consciousness.

about new consciousnessConsciousness is always shifting, and nothing is happening now that hasn't been happening all along. The only thing that's different is our communication technology. And even that isn't new, because when the printing press was invented,  or when someone figured out how to scrawl symbols into a stone wall or onto a piece of papyrus, consciousness shifted. When television became a staple in every home, consciousness shifted.

If we were living in the Middle Ages, or in the Roman Empire during the first hundred years of Christianity, or in Europe during the plagues, we would be saying the same things we're saying now:

. Life has never been this crazy and violent.
. The end of the world is at hand

Or on a more positive note:

. There's new hope coming!
. A new spiritual teacher
. A new religion
. A new age

Life on earth has always been crazy and violent (a lot more crazy and violent than it is now), and there's always new hope coming.  There's a new spiritual teacher on every street corner, and a new spin on an ancient philosophy is always brewing somewhere.

New consciousness is always emerging and evolving. It can never really be "new."
